Abstract
In 7 patients with acute intermittent porphyria maintained on a constant diet, administration of ethinyl estradiol resulted in significant increase in urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid and prophobilinogen. In only 1 of the patients did symptoms suggestive of an exacerbation of acute intermittent porphyria appear. A discussion of the clinical and biochemical significance of the observations is presented.
