Abstract

Abstract : A method is described for the rapid determination of the normality of monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions in submarine CO2 scrubber systems which requires measurements of only the refractive index of the solution and the CO2 content of the air. Because of errors resulting from the accumulation of nonbasic degradation products which contribute to the refractive index but not to the basicity of used MEA solutions, one daily titration is necessary to provide a 24-hr correction factor. The magnitude of the correction factor may provide a useful index to the remaining service life of the solutions.
