Abstract

AbstractWith proper design and operation—particularly materials selection and corrosion control—multistage flash (MSF) evaporators can last 40–50 years. Such lifetimes parallel the obtainable operational life spans of the power units in which MSF desalination units are used in dual-purpose setups. The propositions set forth in this article are founded on use of sound corrosion engineering principles and application of information and experiences accruing from more than 45 years of operating an MSF plant in Saudi Arabia. The article also highlights the roles of local seawater chemistry and low-oxygen concentrations in feed and recirculating brine, as well as procedures to extend periods between acid cleans.
