Abstract

Factitious disorder is a serious mental disorder in which someone deludes others by appearing sick, by deliberately getting sick or by self-injury. Factitious disorder is considered a mental illness because it is associated with severe emotional difficulties and stressful situations. It also can happen when family members or caregivers falsely present others, such as children, as being ill, injured or impaired.
