Abstract
Core–shell nanofibers encapsulating healing agents fabricated via the facile and economical coaxial electrospinning method, were incorporated in carbon fiber/epoxy composite panels to imbue them with self-healing ability. Two types of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) shell based nanofibers were fabricated, one with an epoxy resin core, the other with an amine-based curing agent core. The results indicated the incorporation of core–shell nanofibers containing healing agents not only improved the initial mechanical properties, but also resulted in self-healing carbon fiber-epoxy composites which were able to recover its initial mechanical properties up to four times after sustaining damage to failure.
