Abstract

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles with controlled polymorphs, morphologies and specific sizes presented great application potential in biomedical field. In this work, CaCO3 particles with controlled morphologies and surface micro-structure were successfully synthesized by facile and eco-friendly processes. Results revealed that the morphology of CaCO3 could be controlled from spherical to rice-like and dumbbell shaped particles with different surface micro-structure by introducing Mg2+ and adjusting the molar ratio of Mg2+/Ca2+. Herein, the in vitro bio-activity of prepared rice-like CaCO3 particles was investigated by immersion in SBF solution for 1, 3 and 5 days. Moreover, in vitro cyto-compatibility of prepared rice-like CaCO3 particles has also been evaluated by CCK-8 and live/dead staining assay. Results demonstrated that the rice-like CaCO3 particles possess excellent bio-activity and in vitro cyto-compatibility, which suggest the great promise of prepared rice-like CaCO3 particles in bone tissue engineering.
