Abstract

Abstract The wolf is coming! The wolf is coming! The hue and cry over the crisis in institutions of higher learning has been going on for years, but there appears to be no sign of any change for the better. On the contrary, under the impact of the third upsurge of the commodity economy, institutions of higher learning appear to be embroiled in greater plights and dilemmas than ever before: The "hurray for sixty points" of yore has evolved into mass absenteeism; the erstwhile "chosen of heaven" now do all they can to hide their status; and even the august Beijing University worries about being unable to recruit students. Is this cause for joy, or for concern?
