Abstract
The amplitude and phase method is successfully applied to analytically solve a dielectric Fabry–Perot etalon of arbitrary thickness. The transmittivity of the system as a function of wavelength obtained in this way is shown to be equivalent to the results given by the conventional matrix theory or the multiple beam interference method. An asset of the amplitude and phase formalism is that in addition to describing the overall behaviour of the system, the wave properties are displayed as the field propagates through the optical system.
