Abstract

Optical fiber gratings are finding broad applications for optical fiber communication and sensing due to their characteristics of wavelength selectivity, electromagnetic immunity, low loss, lightweightness, easy connectivity, etc. In this presentation, fabrication of optical fiber gratings and device applications for optical communication and sensing will be discussed. Stabilization of the spectral characteristics of the optical fiber gratings is a prerequisite for employment in the wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) communication systems, and we will discuss the temperature sensitivity suppression techniques for long-period fiber gratings and fiber Bragg gratings. Application of optical fiber gratings includes optical add/drop multiplexer, multiwavelength laser and sensors for temperature, strain, transverse load, ambient index, etc.
