Abstract

Integrated materials chips (IMCs) contain a multitude of discrete materials with varying compositions on a single substrate to enable the rapid screening of material properties, and therefore offer the potential for accelerating the speed of materials research and development. The present work proposes a combinatorial technology based on conventional plasma spray (PS) deposition and laser remelting (LR), and employs the proposed technology to develop Ni-Al intermetallic alloy IMCs with a continuous composition gradient yielding various homogeneous compositions with unique microstructures and microhardness values along the length. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed technology can effectively promote the discovery of relationships between the composition, microstructure, and the inherent properties of materials.
