Abstract

Atmosphere plasma spraying was employed to fabricate TiC Ti5Si3Ti3SiC2 composite coatings by using Ti, SiC and graphite powders as starting materials. The as-sprayed coating was then annealed at 800 °C under Ar condition for comparative study. Results showed that the sprayed coating was consisted of mainly TiC and Ti5Si3 phases, with minor Ti3SiC2 phase. After annealing treatment, the fraction of TiC and Ti3SiC2 phases were increased in the annealed coating. Both of as-sprayed and as-annealed coatings exhibited a micro-laminated structure across the thickness. Hardness and fracture toughness of the as-annealed coating were remarkably enhanced compared with the as-sprayed coating, with the value of 1504 HV and 2.67 MPa m1/2, respectively. Such simultaneous improvement in both of hardness and fracture toughness proved the importance of post-annealing for plasma sprayed coatings.
