Abstract

Deep brain stimulation of the subcallosal cingulate white matter (SCC DBS) has been investigated as a treatment for refractory depression since 2005. Results have generally been favorable in small-scale, open-label trials, but the 6-month outcomes of a randomized, sham-controlled trial appeared disappointing. However, given illness chronicity, the duration of typical efficacy trials may be inadequate to capture the impact of this intervention.
