Abstract

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric disorder, yet the underlying neurochemical factors are largely unknown. α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) exist on glutamatergic neurons connecting the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) with the amygdala and hippocampus. These receptors drive plasticity in this important circuit involved in fear response, stress, and PTSD. Here, we aimed to measure α7 nAChRs in PTSD and controls with positron emission tomography (PET) brain imaging.
