Abstract

The immunologically mediated blistering diseases of the skin and mucous membrane can lead to ocular abnormalities involving any part of the external eye or its adnexae. With the exception of pemphigus vulgaris and its variants, which are characterized by intraepidermal blisters, the majority of the blistering diseases share a subepidermal blister cleavage. It is not surprising, therefore, that significant overlapping ocular presentations occur among the blistering dermatoses. This article will focus on the main features of immunologically mediated diseases with ocular manifestations. Cicatricial pemphigoid, pemphigoid vulgaris, linear IgA bullous disease, and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita usually have ocular involvement. Bullous pemphigoid and dermatitis herpitiformis, on the other hand, may or may not affect the eye.
