Abstract

The intermodal transport is considered as a major potential contributor to solve the problem of the sustainable development of long-distance transport. The external costs of intermodal transport are important to make policies on sustainable transportation. This paper proposes a model to obtain the external costs of intermodal transport. This is followed by a case study of Shanghai-Duisburg, which compares the external costs of two intermodal choices. The results show that the unit external costs are different between transport by sea, rail and road, and the emission cost makes the largest portion of the total external cost among all external costs.
