Abstract

Human Systems Integration (HSI) is the integrated, comprehensive analysis, design and assessment of requirements, concepts, and resources for system Manpower; Personnel, Training, Environment, Safety, Occupational Heath, Habitability, Survivability and Human Factors Engineering. This paper describes a new research effort to extend a set of systems engineering leading indicators developed in prior research, to more effectively address HSI considerations. HSI is tightly coupled with the systems engineering process, particularly in large defense and government programs, making it challenging to determine if HSI is sufficiently considered to ensure a successful program. It is also challenging to isolate and identify HSI issues, particularly in the early stages of acquisition and program development. The objective of the research is to augment and extend the current systems engineering leading indicators, including interpretive guidance, to enhance the predictability of programmatic and technical performance on a program to include adequate HSI consideration.
