Abstract

The aim of this paper is concerning the characterization of the mechanical strength of spot-welded assemblies. The three material zones of the spot-weld (Metal Base, Melted Zone and Heat Affected Zone) are analyzed and studied on different metal sheet assemblies. Quasi-static experimental works and numerical simulation based on tensile-shear, cross-tensile and peeling tests are done. Different fracture modes are put into evidence. A methodology to identify by inverse method the material behavior law and damage parameters is proposed. Simplified modeling of assemblies is then performed. Numerical modeling of ARCAN set-up is performed to characterize a macroscopic fracture criterion. Limitations of this criterion are highlighted.
