Abstract

Objective To detect the expression level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in serum of patients with cervical carcinoma, hysteromyoma and healthy controls, and thus to analyze its potential clinical significance in patients with cervical carcinoma. Methods The peripheral blood from 53 cervical carcinoma patients,43 hysteromyoma patients and 50 healthy controls were collected, and the serum from each sample was isolated, then IL-6 in serum was detected by ELISA kit.The relationship between IL-6 level in serum of patients with cervical carcinoma and age, tumor size, pathological grade, clinical stages were also analyzed. Results Cervical serum IL-6 expression level was significantly higher than the other two groups (P < 0.05) ; The level of IL-6 in patients with poorly differentiated tumors was significantly higher than that in patients with higher differentiated tumor (P < 0.05) ; and the level of IL-6 in patients with clinical stage Ⅲ and stage Ⅳ were significantly higher than that in patients with earlier stages; linear regression showed IL-6 increased by 10 ng/ml when the average diameter of cervical cancer increased 0.902 mm ; logistic regression analysis showed if IL-6 increased by 10 ng/ml,the risk of cervical cancer increased 30.3 % (P < 0.05).Conclusions IL-6,as an important inflammatory cytokines,is found to be significantly increased in serum of cervical carcinoma patients, and the expression level of IL-6 is correlated with tumor size, pathological grade, clinical stage, which reveals that IL-6 plays an vital role in the development of cervical carcinoma. The detection of IL-6 could be helpful to determine the tumor property and monitor the cancer patients. Key words: Cervical carcinoma; Interleukin-6
