Abstract

Objective To study the expression of Wnt5a and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-13 in papillary thyroid carcinoma and their correlation. Methods The expression levels of Wnt5a and MMP-13 were detected by immunohistochemistry in 58 cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma tissues and corresponding paracancerous tissues. Results The expression rate of Wnt5a was 67.2% and 31.0% in papillary thyroid carcinoma tissues and the corresponding paracancerous tissues respectively with statistically significant difference (χ2=15.211, P 0.05). The expression level of MMP-13 was 63.8% and 36.2% in papillary thyroid carcinoma tissues and the corresponding paracancerous tissues respectively with statistically significant difference (χ2=9.968, P 0.05). Wnt5a as well as MMP-13 was expressed highly in papillary thyroid carcinoma tissues. The expression levels of Wnt5a and MMP-13 were positively correlated (r=0.391, P<0.01). Conclusion The high expression of Wnt5a as well as MMP-13 is closely related to the development of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Key words: Papillary thyroid carcinoma; Wnt5a; Matrix metalloproteinase-13; Immunohistochemistry
