Abstract

Objective To explore the role of haptoglobin in papillary thyroid carcinoma by applying tissue microarraies. Methods We constructed the tissue microarraies with 11 papillary thyroid carcinomas,67 benign thyroid nodes and 50 normal thyroid tissues.Immunohistochemical method was applied to detect the expression of haptoglobin in papillary thyroid carcinoma, benign thyroid node and normal thyroid tissues. Results In 112 cases of papillary thyroid carcinomas, the positive expression rate of haptoglobin was 79%.Papillary thyroid carcinoma samples expressed much higher haptoglobin levels than benign thyroid node (12%) and normal thyroids (8%,P <0.05).However,there was no statistically significant difference in the haptoglobin expression between benign thyroid node and normal thyroid tissues (P >0.05).Conclusion Haptoglobin is closely related with the occurrence of human papillary thyroid carcinoma.Furthermore,it may play an important role in development and evolution of this malignant tumor.
