Abstract

More than 9500 measurements of an average indoor 222Rn concentration are made by a method of the passive track dosimetry all over the Ukraine in houses of different architectural design and with different types of building materials. A calculation was made of a weighted average population exposure dose due to 222Rn in air of residential buildings. The dose is estimated at the level of 3.8 mSv per year. A radiation protection system for the protection of the Ukrainian population against exposure to radon is scientifically founded. The system includes technical requirements of measuring facilities, establishment of a system of a quality assurance for measurements of 222Rn in air and a system of control on the basis of relevant radiological services, justification of countermeasures acceptable for Ukraine against exposure to 222Rn.
