Abstract
The main objective of this study is to identify the major factors affecting the export performance of small- and medium-sized agroindustry enterprises (Agro-SMEs) in Turkey. The analysis shows that the export performance of Agro-SMEs has not changed significantly during the sixth development plan (1991-1994). The managers, financial resources, the product characteristics, marketing activities, and trade relations; especially with the European Union (EU), have played an important role on the export performance. Turkish Agro-SMEs realize strong competitive advantages due to low wage labor and favorable climate and soil conditions. There is also relatively good export growth potential in that region for their agricultural products. In order to utilize these advantages fully and increase export performance, they need to improve the factors which affect performance. This paper presents some insights for this purpose.
