Abstract
In the current study, the structural, optical and photoluminescence properties of tin-doped manganese sulfide (Mn1-xSnxS) nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated with PVA have been explored. PVA encapsulated Mn1-xSnxS (x: 0 to 0.3) NPs were synthesized using a chemical route. The bonds' vibrations and bending of the encapsulated NPs were examined by FT-IR spectrophotometer. The NPs’ size was determined using a transmission electron microscope. The XRD measurements were used to investigate the structural properties including average crystallite size (D), dislocation density and micro-stain. It is found that the average D decreases from 20.7 nm (plain MnS) to 14.3 nm (Mn0·7Sn0·3S). The UV–Vis–NIR spectrophotometer was utilized to measure the optical transmittance and absorbance of the encapsulated NPs. The obtained energy bandgap of MnS NPs has been tuned from 3.98 eV to 3.38 eV via Sn-doping. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the prepared samples were de-convoluted via Gaussian fitting software. The PL analysis reveals that the emission of Mn1-xSnxS NPs is red-shifted to cover yellow, orange and red colors, as compared with that of plain MnS NPs. Our novel results confirm that the optical properties of MnS NPs could be tailored via Sn-doping to cover the whole visible region for effective applications in optoelectronics.
