Abstract
ABSTRACT This survey study (N = 1065) examines Americans’ perception of news and citizenship and its relationship with consumption of news via diverse media—traditional news media, cable news channels and political satire—that include features of news yet differ from one another in their adherence to journalistic norms, such as fairness, accuracy and objectivity, to varying degrees. Findings suggest that Americans still hold high expectations for news to be fair, accurate and objective and value the role of news in our democracy and democratic citizenship, yet have negative assessments of their performance, such that news media fall short of the democratic ideal. These findings may speak to the declining public trust in media and growing perception of media bias.
