Abstract

This chapter I begin by examining a narrative analysis study exploring the masculinity narratives of male prisoners in the UK. This initial research identified a man’s relationship with his father as a key factor in shaping his own sense of maleness. My later research explored men’s experience of constructing and performing the masculine self as influenced by the father–son relationship and the gap between the man’s masculinity subject positioning and that of his father. The effect of these relative subject positions on the individual’s psychology is discussed.
