Abstract

On 31 October the clocks go back, which means that children will be arriving and leaving school in the dark. This month′s activities therefore focus on themes that are sure to be on everyone′s minds-light and dark. During a series of practical activities, children will be encouraged to (a.) understand that our eyes need light to see; (b.) know that dark is an absence of light; (c.) consider that there are many different sources of light; (d.) appreciate that some are natural and some are artificial; (e.) learn how light travels in a straight line; (f.) discover how light can be bounced, bent or split; (g.) interpret and present their findings. For best results, it is suggested that these activities are planned out well in advance, with sufficient time to discuss each stage.
