Abstract
Residual compressive tangential stress in the material around the edge of a hole in a plate can be obtained by overstraining the material with a coined ring in the vicinity of the hole. The residual stress at the edge of the hole can then be utilized to reduce the peak tangential tensile stress due to applied loading and thus increase the fatigue life.
