Abstract

Objective To improve the quality of hematology teaching by using the advantage of scientific research of medical institutions and the combination of teaching and scientific research. Methods In hematology teaching, 64 students from grade 2004 in seven-year program in Medical College of Shantou University were divided into experimental group and control group. Experiment group used the teaching method which focused on the cultivation of clinical comprehensive ability, while control group used the traditional teaching method which focused on theoretical knowledge. Examinations on the theories and practical skills were performed to evaluate the two teaching methods when the study finished. The methods and contents of assessment were same in two groups. A questionnaire was given to the students of experiment group. Results It showed that the average scores of examinations on theories and practical skills of experiment group were higher than those of control group. Four clinical research papers written by the students of experiment group were recruited and published in the national medical comprehensive journals. Most of students in the experimental sroup present a positive view on the achievements of the new teaching model.Conclusions The teaching method which focuses on the cultivation of clinical comprehensive ability not only trained the ability of students in clinical and scientific research, but also improved the quality of teaching. It had a certain effect on improving the teachers' teaching skills. Key words: Clinical comprehensive ability; Teaching model; Hematology
