Abstract

It was suggested daily travel time appeared to be stable, named as travel time budget (TTB). With Chinese rapid urbanization and motorization, the stability of daily travel time is worth an in-depth study. Based on travel data of 85 cities including different city categories, it was found that the indicators of trip rate, trip time, and daily travel time per capita were more consistent in large cities than in medium and small cities. From Type II small cities to super cities, the daily travel distance increased from 6.1 to 13.4 kilometers a 119.7% increase, while the daily travel time only increased by 12.5%. It could be deduced that despite aggressive urban expansion, large-scale transportation infrastructure construction has improved the stability of travel time. In this sense, the argument of travel time in city-aggregate level with some budget constraint was valid.
