Abstract

This paper addresses the question of how to exploit emergent behaviour in the design of multi-agent systems. The method advocated is to design the individual agents so that they maintain symbolic representations of emergent behaviour which can then be used as a basis for building higher level behaviours. The paper falls into four main parts: a description of behaviour-based agents, a discussion of emergent behaviour, a description of a methodology for developing agents which exploit emergent behaviour, and a practical example of the application of these ideas to the development of a simulated multi-agent system.
