Expert systems are artificially intelligent computer software that show significant promise for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of purchasing management decision making. This article provides a description of expert systems technology, reports the current status of purchasing expert system applications, presents a number of purchasing expert system applications that offer significant potential for future development, and offers guidelines for expert system development.
