Abstract
This paper discusses the history of expert systems, their migration to the process control room, and their application in process industries. Two case studies that discuss the justification, development, and implementation of expert system applications are presented. The authors' views on the future of expert systems in the process control environment are introduced in the Summary/Conclusions section of the report.
