Abstract

This paper discusses the appropriateness of expert system techniques for management in dairy operations. Typical application fields for expert systems in other commercial and research fields are categorized. Typical structures of problems in milk production are introduced and discussed. Finally, the availability of data about the milk production process is examined. Some suggestions for expert system applications including monitoring, diagnosis, and planning systems in dairy-herd management are discussed and explained using examples. Potential benefits and problems of expert system applications in dairy-herd management are also discussed.
