Abstract

A few years ago N.M. Korobov and E. Hlawka introduced the equivalent concepts of optimal coefficients and good lattice points for use in numerically integrating periodic functions of several variables. The same integration method was independently developed in part by H. Conroy. This chapter discusses experiments on optimal coefficients. Optimal coefficient properties are closely related to questions of rational approximation. The quadratic irrationals are difficult to approximate by rationals, and their best approximations, the convergents of their continued fractions, share this property as regards approximability by rationals of lower denominator. The chapter also discusses the method of Hua and Wang.
