Just after noon on 27 December 1984, two canisters containing a barium/copper oxide mixture were released from a satellite some 104000 km above the dawn flank of the earth. The canisters detonated 1 km away to produce a cloud of barium vapour engulfing the satellite and expanding into the solar wind.
