Abstract

Hydraulic snow melting system using pavement structure has been employed for some critical roads in order to prevent ice and snow formation. This paper describes a 2D hydrothermal numerical model of a hydraulic system that circulates a fluid through a bonding porous asphalt layer. A set of boundary conditions have been defined, and a model of heat and mass transfer has been developed. This model can predict temperature field in pavement structure and surface conditions when the fluid circulates in the porous bonding layer. Model development is described and validated in this paper using data collected from the full-scale hydraulic system.
