Abstract
The use of rough avirulent strains of Salmonella cholerae suis as potential vaccines has been evaluated. Intravenous challenge was found to be an unsuitable method of assessing the immunity produced owing to the development of a hypersensitivity reaction immediately following challenge. Two strains, A3/6 and A3/10, provided useful protection against oral challenge by Salm. cholerae suis as assessed by mortality, weight gains, febrile reaction and faecal excretion of the challenge organism. The A3/10 strain appeared to be non-infective when given by mouth to day-old piglets and after five passages in pigs showed no evidence of virulence when injected parenterally into ten-day and five-week-old pigs.
