Abstract
In this article, a series of consolidated undrained triaxial shear tests and permeability tests were performed to investigate the mechanical and hydraulic behaviour of four different cement-soil composites at confining pressures of 100 kPa to 900 kPa. Four types of binder were adopted: 1. cement, 2. a mix of cement and fly ash, 3. a mix of cement and sisal fibre, and 4. a mix of cement, fly ash and sisal fibre. The content of binder in each composited was 10% by weight. The mechanical and hydraulic parameters of the cement-soil composites were evaluated. Then, the properties of the four composites were analysed, namely, the peak strength, brittle index, elastic modulus, effective strength parameters and hydraulic conductivity. The laboratory results indicated that the combination of fly ash and sisal fibre greatly increased the peak strength of the cemented soil. The addition of sisal fibre decreased the permeability while the addition of fly ash increased the permeability of the cemented soil. In addition, as the confining pressure was increased, the failure mode of the composites changed from dilation to shear.
