Abstract

The diagnostic system combined with the technique of optical interferometry, microscope, computer and image processing, for the study of mini-crystal (the size<1mm) growing in situ has been developed. Both growth rate and concentration gradient in the solution are measured by two microscope interferometers of the system. The experimental setup is discussed. The dissolution and crystallization processes of KCl crystal have been studied in a growth cell of 3mm×3mm×4.5mm. The change of concentration in dissolution and crystallization in time sequence, the growth rate of crystal vs time and the concentration gradient have been determined by the optical experiments. The experiments demonstrate that gravity is an important factor in crystal growth, and it has a close relationship between the growth rate and concentration gradient.
