Abstract

Three-dimensional (3-D) localized magnetic reconnection was studied experimentally in TS-4 spherical torus (ST) merging device. When strong compression force IAcc∼ 60 kA compressed two STs with small guide field BX/B¦¦∼ 1, toroidal modes n=1-3 of current sheet was observed to grow only during their reconnection. A new finding is that deformation of curret sheet causes the reconnection rate to increase. When weak compression force IAcc∼ 0 kA compressed two STs with large guide field BX/B¦¦∼ 7, their reconnection rate was maintained small. These phenomena indicate that 3-D localized reconnection is one of fast reconnection mechanisms.
