Abstract
Abstract 1. 1. L-methionine has been shown by colorimetric technics to be absorbed from both left and right colonic loops. The average absorption during a thirty minute perfusion was 22 per cent of a 40 mm solution or 131 mg. 2. 2. Decarboxylation of methionine in both colonic and jejunal loops was observed using radioactive methionine, tagged as carbon 14 on the carboxyl carbon atom. Although not previously described, this decarboxylation may be an essential part of its transport mechanism. 3. 3. Using L-methionine-C 14 , with a methyl carbon label, preliminary studies have confirmed the evidence of absorption of this amino acid from the colon. Radioactivity was observed in portal blood, peripheral blood, and urine during perfusion of either small or large bowel loops. It is tempting to predict that colonic administration of amino acids for nutrition may some day be part of the clinician's armamentarium.
