Abstract

This paper experimentally investigates the performance of a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) free space optical (FSO) communication system using an indoor turbulence chamber. Two laser transmitters at wavelengths of 780 nm and 850 nm are used with two receivers. The current outputs of two receivers were combined using equal gain combining (EGC) scheme and compared with single input single output (SISO) FSO system. A weak turbulence was generated within the atmospheric chamber and link performances are measured using Q-factor and bit error rate (BER) for on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme. The results demonstrate that the use of MIMO can improve the performance of the FSO communication channel under weak turbulent conditions compare to the SISO system.
