Abstract

The effect of mitral incompetence on aortic, left auricular, pulmonary, and venous pressures is investigated simultaneously. The aortic is seen to be unaffected, and reasons are given why this is so.Left auricular pressure is found to be enormously increased, especially under conditions of stress. The pulmonary and venous pressures are seen to be dependent on the state of the right ventricle, which may show impairment. It is indicated that stimulation of the vagus may be used as a test for the existence of mitral incompetence when the height of the left auricular pressure gives reason for doubt.
