Experimental investigation on strength and durability of light weight bacterial concrete

Abstract

Concrete, broadly used non-renewable material in the construction industry has less time span and service period. Recent studies shows that the bacteria of different types heals the cracks that are developed in the concrete over time. This type of concrete has the tendency to repair on its own that results in the lengthening of service period of the building and the maintenance cost is reduced in considerable amount. Microbes develops the impermeable calcite layer by the precipitation process (MICP) developed on the surface of the concrete layer, due to actions of the bacteria (Bacillus subtilis JC3) .The calcite layer fills the cracks on the concrete surface and protects the reinforcement from corrosion. To make the concrete as light weight concrete, foaming agent is induced in the concrete mix during batching process
