Abstract
A photoelastic technique has been used to investigate the propagation of longitudinal stress waves in free rods. The experiments have made it possible to establish the mechanism of stress wave formation under impulsive loading, explore the dynamic state of stress of the rod, and estimate the effect of the inelastic resistance of the material.
