Abstract
Groups of 12 rats had either 15, 45, or 125 acquisition trials in a straight runway with 100% small (74 mg.) food reinforcement, followed by a minimum of 40 extinction trials, all at 10 trials per day. A negative relationship between resistance to extinction and number of reinforcements was found, supporting results of North and Stimmel (1960) and Ison (1962), and indicating that differences between these and previous Skinner box results are not due simply to differences in magnitude of reward. The high reinforcement groups made significantly more avoidance responses, supporting a frustration theory of extinction (Amsel, 1958).
