Abstract

In this paper, the effectiveness and feasibility of the feathery receiver initiated transmission (F-RIT) protocol based wireless smart utility network (Wi-SUN) systems are proved experimentally by developing the actual modules and experimental evaluations. The experimental results show that the F-RIT based Wi-SUN systems can achieve over 90% transmission success rate under the practical automatic meter infrastructure (AMI) specified conditions. Additionally, the transmission failure factors in the experimental results are analyzed for the further improvement of the F-RIT protocol. The results of the analysis indicate that the timeout problem is the main factor of the transmission failures in the F-RIT based Wi-SUN systems.
