Abstract
A selective survey of introductory geology courses in the United States and Canada reveals several interesting new approaches to the traditional physical-historical sequence. The introductory courses at ten schools are discussed in some detail. The courses differ in their approach and subject matter, but all courses stress concepts and ideas rather than rote memorization of factual material. In most of the courses there is a strong emphasis on recent developments and research in the geosciences. Most of the courses attempt to integrate the subject matter and concepts of physical and historical geology.
