Abstract

In this study experimental and numerical investigations on the mechanical and flow behavior of the multi-sphere (MS) rice particles with different degrees of shape approximation are conducted. This work aims to provide a better understanding of the adaptability of the degree of the shape approximation. The results indicated that rice particles can be approximated using the MS models with axi-symmetric ellipsoid shape. Furthermore, the angularity factor, AF, can be used to quantify the degree of shape approximation. As AF decreases, the degree of shape approximation increases. Finally, selection of the shape approximation scheme depends on the application of granular materials. Specifically, for the static and dynamic mechanical behavior of the single particle, the degree of shape approximation should not be strictly accurate, but should be appropriately rough. However, for the static and dynamic flow behavior of the particle assembly, the degree of shape approximation should be accurate.
