Abstract

This work mainly focus on the drilling of GFRP composite material. Drilling of FRP composite material is different than the other material due to its anisotropic behaviour. During drilling of FRP composites some serious damage are occur such as; fiber pull-out, metric cracking and delamination. Drilling induced delamination is the major problem during mechanical drilling. Thrust force plays important role in drilling of FRP composite material. In this experiment, three different types of drills; helical flute (HSS) drill, Carbide tipped straight shank (K20) drill and Solid carbide 8 facet drills has been used. Tool materials are consider as major factor, which is responsible for drilling induced damage. Cutting parameters also influence drilling induced damage. Drilling induced delamination has been measured by using image processed technique. The results indicate that qualities of drill holes significantly improved when solid a carbide 8 facet drill was used.
